I was so happy to hear Jennifer Withers will be joining us at SAIR this year. When local SA writes come together for a great cause - we know we are shaping the future. And her book sounds fabulous.
Jennifer Withers has been writing since she was seven years old, banging out stories about dragons and damsels in distress on an ancient typewriter. She went on to earn a BA in English Studies at the University of Pretoria. Since then, she has taken writing courses through Writer’s Write, and Allaboutwriting. Jennifer lives in Pretoria, with her husband, two dogs, and an ageing cat. The War Between is her first novel.
The War Between
A human war over dwindling resources has all but
destroyed the world. In a country once known as South Africa, two cities struggle to survive. Toria is believed to contain the final generation of humans, while Jozenburg is inhabited by beings created and born in a laboratory, gifted with abilities both strange and terrifying. The two species have known peace for many years, but with their respective cities surrounding the remaining resources, tensions are rising. The two leaders of Jozenburg are twin siblings Syra and Draiken, and with their first successful conversion of a human to a superhuman, Draiken sets a plan in motion that will bring his kind, and the humans, to the brink of war. The arrival of Dominico in Jozenburg, a girl with unique and dangerous abilities, and a human commander claiming to have saved her life, Syra is forced to reconsider her views of not only herself, but of the beings she considered her enemies.
I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by two young talents in the media industry for SAIR event happening this April and was so impressed by what these two youths have accomplished with their lives so far that I needed to get the word out there of what is on the rise for SA youngsters.
I asked him some great questions like the challenges he has faced and sees SA artists face in the industry, where he sees himself in 5 years and how important studies are to succeed in life...
Meet Raymond Ramodisa
Rapper, Singer, Songwriter, Filmmaker, Photographer
Gift Raymond Ramodisa, better known by his stage name Raymnd, No Typo is a South African recording artist from Giyani, in the Limpopo Province. As the last of five children in his family, where his older brother introduced him to Hip-Hop music, Raymnd fell in love with the genre in the late 90’s when Boom Bap(Hip-Hop sub-genre) was at its prime. His favourite rappers at the time included, Mase, Big Pun, Notorious B.I.G and Treach from Naughty by Nature. He started watching videos on music channels such as Channel O.
My name is Raymnd, I am a musician and filmmaker, born and raised in Limpopo where my love for the media and entertainment industry began. I make Hip-Hop music, growing up with two brothers who loved listening to Hip-Hop got me listening to the genre from a young age. I would always be glued to the TV screen growing up, i could sing along to almost anything RnB and Rap, while doing the dance to the song just as they would, if not better.
In my primary school years i would compete in story telling and acting competitions with schools on provincial level. I began writing my own music in my late Primary school years and would record and perform them throughout high school, then studied Film and Television studies in my tertiary years.
Studies are very important, I believe it should not stop either, i still have a few things i would like to study further. I don't think i would be where i am at this point if i had never studied my profession. Telling stories both visually and vocally got a whole lot better after i gained the Know-How.
In 5 years i see myself having opened doors and broke the ice for many people after myself who have the same dreams and even inspire those with different interests which they would like pursue. I see myself as a respected musician, writer and film maker in 5 years, celebrating 12 years after the release of my first music project and jumping bigger hurdles while I enjoy some fruits of my labour in the industry.
Some of the challenges i face today are reaching bigger audiences, i believe there are many people in the country who would appreciate my music and stories whom haven't ran into any of my work before.
From here, I am recording my second EP for this year, while preparing for my Álbum which will be released in 2017. I am working on short films which are the visual renditions of the music works, people can keep up with my activities on Twitter and my Facebook page... @RAYMND_MUSIC / Raymnd.
Besides being in the studio, or in the field shooting content. I like listening to more music and watching TV, I love keeping up with the world.
Some of my idols include my eldest brother, my former mentor SpaceMunna and Jay Z for the hard work and brains.
All I could ever advice anyone pursuing a career in the media, is to follow their passion and study their field. I look forward to everyday ahead, it's the best feeling to do what you love.
Bringing stories to life is the best part of what i do. I love seeing ideas come to life and meeting inspiring people, but creating is the best part of all for me.
2016 is surely the year to look out for Raymnd’s 3rd music project titled Son Of Man, as well as his U.N.H.E.P. ‘Features from Raymnd in 2016 include songs on Vic-Mash, Token Dagger, PrimeTheGifted, Em-Gee, SpaceMunna, Black Elite(USA), Lekkersweet and many more's albums. To keep up with Raymnd’s activities…
